Alleged killer DPO released on bail

Dismissed Divisional Police Officer of Pen Cinema Police Division, Segun Fabunmi, who was accused of killing one Adedamola Daramola has been released on bail.

Fabunmi was said to have shot Adedamola and injured three others at Yaya-Abatan, Agege, Lagos, during the January 2012 protest against the removal of fuel subsidy.

had reported that Fabunmi, who is standing trial at a Lagos High Court, Igbosere, was also charged with attempted murder and causing grievous bodily harm on Alimi Abubakar, Egbujor Samuel and Chizorba Odoh.

Justice Olabisi Akinlade had on July 4, 2013, granted Fabunmi bail due to poor health and admitted him to bail in the sum of N250m with two sureties in like sum. She said the two sureties must be resident in Lagos and had three years tax clearance.

Akinlade added that one of them must have landed property worth N100m, while the other must be a director in either the state or federal civil service.

The trial judge held that based on medical evidence before the court, it was incumbent on her to grant the accused bail for him to have access to special medical attention which he would not likely get in prison if denied bail.

Prisons authorities confirmed to our correspondent on the telephone on Sunday that  the former DPO had been released after meeting his bail condition.

Public Relations Officer, Nigerian Prisons Service, Lagos State Command, Mr. Biyi Jeje, said, “I was informed that Fabunmi was released a few weeks ago from Kirikiri Maximum Prison after meeting his bail condition.”

The charges preferred against the ex-Chief Superintendent of Police, read in part, “That you, Segun Fabunmi, on or about January 9, 2012, about 9.30am, while on security patrol at Yaya Abatan Junction, Ogba Agege, Lagos, in Ikeja Judicial Division, murdered one Adedamola Daramola.

“That you, Segun Fabunmi, on or about January 9, 2012 at about 9.30a.m while on security patrol at Yaya Abatan Junction, Ogba Agege, Lagos in Ikeja Judicial Division did attempt to kill one Alimi Abubakar by shooting at him with AK 47 rifle.”

The alleged offences of murder was said to have contravened sections 221, 228 and 243 of the Criminal Law, No. 11, 2011.

The dismissed cop had pleaded not guilty to all the charges preferred against him by the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions.
