Two teachers of the School- Based
Management Committee, which is under the Nigeria Union of Teachers in
Keffi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State; have reportedly lost
their lives over unpaid salaries of in the state.
The chapter’s chairman, Alhaji Aliyu Babayo, who confirmed the incident to Saturday PUNCH on Friday, attributed the death of the teachers to unpaid salaries, adding that many other teachers were on sick beds.
Babayo identified the deceased teachers
as: Mr. Danladi Ibrahim and Mr. Zaccheus Olawuyi, saying that they fell
ill and died as they could not afford proper medical treatment.
He called on the State Governor, Umaru
Tanko Al-Makura, to pay teachers’ salaries in the interest of
educational development in the state.
He, however, maintained that the affected teachers had not gone on strike because of their commitments to state development.
A public school teacher, who spoke on
condition of anonymity, said teachers in the state had not been
receiving full salaries since the beginning of the year.
Although,
the state government got N8.3bn as bailout to offset salary and pension
arrears in the state, it has yet to pay up the arrears.
